Alpha in Prisons

There are more than 10 million people in prison around the world. Our vision is that every inmate will have the opportunity to explore the Christian faith through Alpha.

Prisoners often experience a sense of loss and have a hunger to find purpose and meaning in life. Alpha can give them a chance to ask life’s big questions and find out about the Christian faith in a safe, informal and friendly environment.

Alpha is currently running in more than 800 prisons, in 55 countries, all around the globe.

"Prison can be a place of transformation, and Alpha for Prisons has proved again and again a means by which many prisoners have found transformation – new purpose, direction and faith. It is truly a remarkable work."

– The Rt Revd Dr Graham Tomlin

Bishop of Kensington, UK

"As followers of Christ, we are called to show mercy to those in prison. Alpha has proved to be a wonderful tool for the Church to take the gospel into prisons across the world."

– Bishop Grzegorz Rys

Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Kraków, Poland

Alpha in prison offers...

Quality

Alpha has been attended by an estimated 29 million people around the globe. In 2016, over 45,000 people experienced Alpha in all kinds of prisons. Resources and training materials are continually updated and made relevant for the prison context.

Sustainability

Alpha is sustainable because the local church carries the workload of planning, hosting and presenting Alpha, under the supervision of the Prison Chaplain. Alpha is run in full cooperation of the prison authorities.

Security

Alpha volunteers are required to attend security training before they start to work in prisons. Alpha prison training is provided by our National Alpha Offices and the Global Alpha Prison Team in partnership with the prisons.

Get started

For reasons of security, it's vital that volunteers undergo
training provided by the National Alpha Office,
and that each Alpha running in prison is registered.
